Take a fresh look: ordinary spaces can hold unseen potential.
Our own spaces can be transformed just like the boat shed, if we look beyond what we see to imagine what they could become. A simple window can become a beautiful setting for sunset drinks. A tree stump in the garden can become a chic drinks table. Even an overgrown garden can offer a secret picnic nook. Or think slightly bigger. A garage cleared out for an easy “takeover” with folding chairs and a speaker. Drinks and canapés on the driveway as the sun goes down.
Instead of focusing on what a space is “meant” for, consider how it could be used with a few small tweaks.

Choose intention over extravagance.
There were no grand flourishes at Ben’s long lunch. Seasonal produce was chosen with care, the table arranged to encourage conversation and take in the view, and the dishes were shared generously, accompanied by great wine. When we lead with intention, even the simplest moments can become an expression of care and creativity. Set the table outside instead of in. Light a candle and set the table, even if the only reason is because it’s a Tuesday. Or open that bottle you’ve been saving for a special occasion, because what’s more special than right now?
Embrace the power of simplicity.
By resisting the urge to overcomplicate, Ben allowed the shed’s natural character to shine. Stripping everything back to the absolute essentials allowed the flavours, landscapes, craft and company to come forward. By leaning into simplicity, we can give everything else space to be seen. The same applies at home. A few well-chosen elements: vintage glassware, something simple to share, and a place to sit is all you need. When everything else is pared back, what remains has room to be enjoyed.

Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2025 put New Zealand on the map with its captivating flavour.
When we use our imagination, even the unexpected spaces can surprise us. This lunch was a reminder that sometimes all it takes is a shift in perspective, a fresh look and the confidence to create what could be.
